William Ridley came to Australia in 1849, worked as a classics master at the Australian College, Sydney, was ordained by the Presbyterian Synod and appointed to Balmain in 1850, Dungog in 1851 and New England in 1852. He studied aboriginal languages, especially Kamilaroi, and customs. He published works on Australian aborigines and aboriginal languages.
